Welcome to the home web site for the 556th Strategic Missile Squadron. The 556th SMS was activated at two different times using two different missile systems. The SM-62 or Snark weapon system was based at Presque Isle Air Force Base in Presque Isle, Maine from 1959 thru 1961. The SM-65 or Atlas F weapon system was based at Plattsburgh Air Force Base in Plattsburgh, New York from 1962 thru 1965. This website has been divided into two sections, each dedicated to a specific weapon system.
