What We Are About

This web site is dedicated to those who served in, supported and helped to maintain the missile sites of the 556th Strategic Missile Squadron. This Air Force unit was on 24-7-365 active duty two different times in it's history from 1959 until 1961 and again from 1962 until 1965. The first 556th SMS unit was in charge of the SM-62 Snark IRBM missile system deployed at Presque Isle AFB in Presque Isle, Maine. The second 556th SMS unit was in charge of twelve SM-65 Atlas F missile silo bases deployed in locations around Plattsburgh AFB in Plattsburgh, New York with two sites in Vermont. These bases were a major nuclear deterent during the Cuban Missile Crisis. This site is meant to be a source of information related to the 556th SMS and is intended as a tribute to the hard work and sacrifices that were made in successfully carrying out a very difficult mission.
